Maximize Your Nanny Time

How best to utilize your nanny service to save money and time? Look into your daily routine and needs as a family. See what you can delegate as a reasonable responsibility to your nanny.

Some of the things that come to mind for infant nannies are tummy-time, exercises, short exposure to morning sun, prepare or make baby food, taking out used diapers and such, organizing baby cloths, laundry and keeping the environment clean for the infant or crawler. My nanny used to wash the floor mats and sweep the floor for my son when he was crawling around.

Having my nanny prepare food for the children and adults have been a great time and money saver for us. Home-cooked meals are generally more healthy and economical. It adds to family atmosphere at meal time, also keep the doctors away. It’s not too much to ask your nanny to wash vegetables or fruits, cut them up and put them away for later use. Or putting potatoes in the oven to cook or steam some vegetable for the children. These are easy things to train and execute. Baking can also be healthy, fun and art inspiring for older children.

Going on a trip? Make a list and ask your nanny to put aside baby things for you to pack. Or if the children are older, ask the nanny to help them pack.

Need some stationaries, postal stamps or pick up a birthday card for a 4 year old? Need to send a package or walk something to your neighbor? These are easy things to get in small outings that can save you some running around.

If your children are learning languages, ask your nanny to play language CD’s or go over flash cards strategically in the day as one of the activities. Better yet, ask your nanny to be a student and your child can learn from teaching.

There are many things that are enjoyable for your nanny besides traditional duties. Change your nanny’s tasks as your needs change. Know your nanny’s interests and encourage activities that everyone will enjoy and learn from. My children have done many fun activities with our nannies that they wouldn’t normally have experienced with us.

As usual, good luck and have fun with exploring.
